Post Finals Fun

So, finals are done! I did pretty well with all my papers and projects and now I get to enjoy some time off, mostly filled with holiday stuff
So far, I ate some baked goods, saw the ne Hobbit movie with some friends, and got to play a new videogame.

This year the husband and I are doing Yule instead of Christmas at our apartment. I'm not super into Xmas anyways, and he has work and we have family obligations. So we wanted a day to ourselves. We decided to go easy on gifts this year, and I got a PILE of cool books, which was awesome. I didn't get a good pic of his gifts but I got him some Star Trek and Batman gear, which he enjoyed, and a pack of miracle fruit tabs which proved to be super fun.

We also made cinnabuns, cause cinnabuns.

Now, there's not much for me to do besides hang around and play this awesome game. I am addicted to this game, it's like a newer shinier Skyrim, and that's kinda heaven for me. I'm playing as a dwarven lady warrior right now, and hitting on Blackwall pretty hard, but I intend to do a few play throughs since I also want to see the story if I support the Templars rather than the Mages.

It's time for finals again! Once again I am swamped, but here's a quick peek at some art for my cartoon/comics independent study project.

What I'm Up To

Currently I am-

Reading- Fun Home by Alison Bechdel
This story about Alison Bechdels family and growing up is amazing. Well drawn, well written, and full of that special kind of drama that only comes from families.

Watching- Peaky Blinders
I just started watching this show after Netflix recommended it. I was surprised by how much I like the show, the post World War I setting is really interesting. I also love gang stories, which makes this perfect.

Listening To- The Gaelic Storm
This Irish band is really fun to listen to, they tell funny stories between songs and they always seem to be drinking and having a really fun time at shows.

Working On- Furries for my independent study
I had never drawn furries before, but really wanted to draw something new and fresh for my independant study. This has been really great for me because I never get to draw anything like this for my art in other classes, and it's helping my with the artist black I had in this class.

Batman Underoos

I got bat family Underoos for Mike and I! Hot topic was having a sale and I couldn't resist the idea matching nerdy underthings.

Cooking- Red Curry Ramen

Ramen is great in a lot of ways. It's cheap, easy to find, easy to make, and tasty. It also sucks in a lot of ways, it's super salty, a bit boring, and not that healthy. My solution is to always add something to my basic ramen. This version is spicy and sweet and super easy to make.

Red Curry Ramen Recipe-
1 pack oriental ramen
1 large bell pepper, chopped
1 can coconut milk
1/2 large onion, diced
1/2 cup mushrooms, sliced
2 tablespoons red curry paste

Mix half the can of coconut milk with 1 cup water and 1 tbsp curry paste, and the seasoning packet and bring it to a boil. While it is cooking take the onion, mushrooms and half the bell pepper and cook them until the onion is nice and clear. Then add them to the broth. Once the mix is at a full boil, add the noodles from the ramen pack. Cover and reduce to a simmer for 2 min, then pour into you bowls.
Take the remaining coconut milk, bell pepper and curry pasta and pulse in a food processor. Take the sauce and divide it between your bowls.

GKE 2014- The Geeky Kink Event

GKE, the Geeky Kink Event, has come and gone once again. My husband and I have now attended three years in a row, and it just keeps getting better. GKE is special because it brings together two communities we both love, the geek community and the BDSM and kink community. This creates a really unique place where people can have all sorts of fun, from playing boards games to needle play demonstrations.

Hallowmas at The Wick

Halloween is a special time of year for fans of The World Inferno Friendship Society. Every year for over a decade now, they have been celebrating Halloween with a special show- Hallowmas. Everyone gathers together to celebrate The Great Pumpkin.

The great pumpkin god demands everyone be sincere, and believe in him. The Great Pumpkins bids everyone join him, down in the pumpkin patch.

The best part of the night was the finale. The whole room was lit up with lights that mimicked flames on the walls, and then fans marched in bearing giant pumpkins, glowing and bobbing around above the crowd. The song, in honor of the Great Pumpkin, has an almost gospel like sound to it, fitting the deeply spiritual nature of the event. The moshing that comes with the breakdown made the pumpkin bounce around like they were floating in choppy surf.

I brought my own little pumpkin offering. he was the only little albino there. I also took him out for coffee before the show since it was a bit chilly outside.

Getting Into The Holiday Spirit

The Halloween spirit that is!
The holiday season is in full swing in my apartment. I live in an itty bitty top floor apartment, so decorating hasn't happened just yet, but I have been indulging in some other ways.

I bought myself these amazing Halloween flats a week or so ago and they finally arrived! I still need to break them in, but I love them despite the blisters. They add the perfect little festive touch to a simple outfit and they are taking the place of my old black flats which were a bit of a wreck.

I love to cook (you guys know that right? I DO have a cooking blog after all), and this cute new spooky apron is the best. I can be a messy cook so it's nice to have somethign to keep my clothes clean that is still nice looking. Bonus- I get to feel like a little witch stirring a cauldron when I'm cooking.

And it wouldn't be Halloween without cider and scary movies! This cinnamon hard cider is really tasty and is the perfect thing to sip when curled up in a blanket, watching vampires. I still hadn't gotten a chance to see Only Lovers Left Alive so I was happy to see it available at redbox. Made for a great night in with the Husbando.

Video Spotlight- Welcome to Hell + bonus fanart

So this past week I got really into this youtube cartoon, Welcome To Hell. It's a short cartoon about a demon kid named Sock, and the human he is tasked with tormenting, Jonathan. In fact I got so into it, I even made a little fan art doodle to give myself a break form my regular classwork/serious art.

Fall Fashion Finds Buys

Fall is here and that means fall fashion, which is my fave type of fashion. Hello dark colors, spooky details, knits and layers.

I just ordered these trick or treat loafers from ASOS. I couldn't resist the classic shape with such cute details. Bonus, they're gonna make for great, comfortable walking shoes, and the design is sublte enough for every day wear.

Another ASOS Halloween find. I'm not the biggest fan of crop tops or cute prints, but the minimalist palette and simple bat shapes seemed pretty versatile. I can see this with black leggings and a comfy oversized cardigan, or with knit tights and black booties and a moto jacket.

This jacket is going to keep me warm all winter. Faux suede, faux shearling lining (in black!), oversized moto shape, it has everything I could want. It gets cold in NY so a good coat is important, you wear it most of Fall and then all Winter.

A light jacket is also a good buy. Some Fall days are brisk, but not quite cold enough for a full on heavy coat. This all vegan jacket is the perfect way to deal with autumn winds and chill. Cozy, cute and would look great in my closet.

Anyone else planning some Fall fashion buys?

Recent Looks

I am loving this cooler weather. I can finally wear all my nice clothes again. I love the beach and swimming, but Summer fashion is simply not my thing. Layers and knits and leggings are my staples.

Movie Review- Tusk

Tusk is the latest work put out by one of my favorite people in cinema, Kevin Smith. It's his second foray into the horror genre, and I have to say that for me, the second time was the charm.
Turk is not a great movie by any means. It's a movie about a man being turned into a walrus by a lunatic. It's hard to take that premise and really make anything too artistic or highbrow. It is possible to take that idea and make something slightly nauseating though.
The story focuses on Justin Long as Wallace, a sort of douchey, sort of hipster with a bad mustache and a shock jock-ish podcast. His partner in crime is Teddy, played by Haley Joel Osment, a chubby best friend type who is also sleeping with Wallace's girlfriend (played by Ally Leon in one of my least favorite roles in the film). Wallace is on the hunt for a good story for his podcast when his adventures take him deep into Manitoba Canada, where he meets an old man named Howard Howe (Michael Parks), who is full of stories to share. However, it turns out Howe is also a lunatic obsessed with walruses, and a serial killer to boot.
Wallace falls into Howes evil clutches and as he begins the painful transformation from man to beast, it is left to his girlfriend and best friend to track him down and save him. This is done with the hekp of one of the best characters in the film, Guy Lapointe, an ex cop from Quebec played to great affect by Johnny Depp. Depp is easily one of the best parts of the movie, his accent is ridiculous and his mannerisms add a lot of fun to a sort of gorey story.

Tusk shines the most when Justin Long is on screen. He starts as an unlikable asshole and ends as a disgusting, sort of walrus like flesh lump. If you are a fan of body horror and over the top b movie effects, this movie is worth a watch. The walrus costume the team designed for this movie is sort of a work of art. A giant, lumpy, patchwork affair made of various human parts cut apart and sewn  backtogether in a rather haphazard looking way. Also, Wallace spend most of his time as a walrus drooling, crying, oozing and making noises like a gutted cow.
As a long time horror movie fan, and someone very into the body horror sub genre, I was pleased to note a faint feeling of queasiness while watching this. It's not a great film, but it does what it needs to do, it makes me feel a little grossed out, and after some of the movies I've seen, that is a feat in and of itself.
So, go see the movie. I give it a solid 3.5/5. Go see it just for Depp, or just for the walrus suit, but go see it.

I Played Destiny, And It Made Me Want To Shave My head

So I buzzed of all my hair. For those of you who don't play video-games or haven't gotten a hold of Destiny yet, it's a gorgeous amazing sci fi game by the makers of Halo, and it's got Peter Dinklage voicing a tiny robot.
At the beginning of the game players get to create a character, out of three races. Humans, Exos and Awoken. Awoken are an alien race with crazy colored skin and hair who come from deep space. Pretty sweet huh?

The buzz also lends itself really well to some intense make up.

I did a bit of self care the other day as prep for my wedding, including some new make up and a new hair color. This dye is Ferria's cool black, which means in the sun it has a lovely blue sheen to it which I love, and not a hint of brown.

Video Spotlight- Five Nights At Freddy's with Markiplier

Have you Heard of Five Nights At Freddy's? This little survival horror games has been making a big name for itself, racking up sales on steam and getting a lot of attention, because it is scary as shit. Really.
The premise of the game is that you play as a security guard at a kids restaurant filled with animatronic animals who roam the halls at night. You can keep an eye on them via cameras places throughout the space, but you are unable to leave the security booth, and have limited power to use the cameras lights, or shut the automatic doors. And if these furry friends catch you, it's not very fun.
If you aren't into horror games or don't have a way to play this yourself, the next best thing is this amazing video series by Markiplier, who bravely stayed five whole nights at Freddy's and recorded just how scary this game really is.
Warning for cursing and jump scares.

On Being Visibly Modified

Today I got my hands tattooed. This was a bit of a milestone for me since all my other tattoos up to this point have been able to be hidden with nothing more than a crew neck shirt with long sleeves and a pair of jeans. Now, that does mean being covered from neck to ankle, but it could still look...normal. And this seems to be a tipping point over that line.
Tattoos and piercings are becoming so common these days, that having a few small, out of the way ones is usually fine with most people. And ankle tattoo or tiny nose stud are all pretty ubiquitous. They are no longer defining traits of the alternative sect, but there does seem to be a limit on how much a person can do and still pass as "normal".
Studies have suggested women are more than twice as likely as men to seek tattoo removal. I cannot help but wonder if there is an element of gender inequality here. Women's bodies are often considered public property. If a women doesn't look traditionally feminine, people feel free to criticize her.
Tattoos in western society gained a lot of hold post WWII when a lot of men in the service got tattoos. When they came back, they flooded the workforce with tattoos, so it became more and more normal for men to have visible ink. The trend continued, and women started to get more and more visible tattoos as well, but still with more criticism than most men faced.

I now have over a dozen tattoos, and over a dozen piercings. I am firmly in the "modified" camp. I cannot pass as unmodified without taking a pair of pliers to my face and covering my body from neck to fingertip to ankle. And I plan on doing more. I know I want a dark mark on my left forearm, and a pile of books and teacups and scrabble pieces on my left leg in honor of my grandma who passed away, and one day I want to finish piercing my ears.
I will never be able to get a standard office job looking the way I do. I know that, I accept that. I also never lan on working in a place like that. Thankfully the arts are more forgiving of things like this.

The Witch and The Demon - Two Dark Styles

When it comes to dark fashion, there are a few common comparisons that come up again and again. Witches and demons are two mythical features that always seem like great inspiration points for the darkly inclined, and what's great is how they are actually so different despite both being very goth/rock/nu goth friendly.
Here is a breakdown of some fo the style points of each look-

The Witchy girl is feminine and soft, but still can be scary. She doesn't shy away from an intense look that has a lot going on. Decorative details like lace and beading shine here, so this look is great for those who like embellishment. This look also lends itself equally well to revealing or more modest looks.

Witch Fashion Points-
Dark prints
Long layers
Lace
Pendants
Crystals
Loose knits
Relaxed pants
Velvet

The demon girl look is very flexible. It can super sexy and sultry, or borrow more from the boys with structured menswear pieces and pants. This look is comfortable and a bit more pared down, while style being heavy on the drama thanks to cut and fabric choices taking front and center.

Demon Girl Fashion Points-
Faux Leather
Faux Fur
Leggings/Tight pants
Collared shirts
Denim
Buckles
Studs
